Customising Clarivu™ and Refractive lens exchange
At Bettersight we believe its essential to personalise all treatments for the benefit of our patients. In many ways this type of personalisation reaches its apogee with a treatment already as refined as Clarivu™ and Refractive lens exchange. Having delivered many thousands of successful treatments over the years at Bettersight we have cultivated a deep understanding of the myriad ways of customising these fine treatments.
In the assessment section you can learn about the numerous types of eye scans and measurements that are carried out as part of each and every consultation that we conduct. These scans open up many ways that we can help optimise our treatment plans.
Customisation can encompass both the procedure itself and of course on the choice of lens implant.
Surgical customisation comes about as a result of the detailed evaluation of all eye scan measurements and also from the careful physical examination of the eye. Experienced eye surgeons can identify numerous potential issues from a planned RLE perspective and draw up a range of counter measures if required. Needless to say we take great pride in our surgeons’s ability to identify any such issues and address them in the most appropriate way.
The precise methods of surgical customisation are beyond the scope of a general website but such methods are a core feature of high quality surgical eye care.
The most significant advancement in customising RLE and Clarivu surgery has come about with the advent of very sophisticated LASER devices that provide surgeons with more precision and control than ever before. Better Control, Better precision in our view leads directly to Bettersight ! All the benefits that the LENSAR laser assisted device provides for cataract surgery apply equally to patients undergoing RLE and Clarivu treatments too.
Lens Implant Customisation
Today there is a plethora of lens implants available in the UK and across the world. At Bettersight we do not cut any corners on our choices – we only select from the very best, premium range of proven lens implants. We have access to a wide range of premium quality lens implants and part of our role is to provide in depth expert guidance on lens implant selection.
Naturally this is driven in part by your requirements and your lifestyle but equally it is directed by examination findings, eye scan measurements and our own previous experience of outcomes. We will endeavour to share with you our experience of lens implants and help you to make a choice in the most informed way possible.
The following types of lens implants form part of our repertoire at Bettersight.
- Trifocal Lens Implants
One of a new generation of true ‘multifocal’ lens implants and currently the only trifocal that we at Bettersight are offering because of its proven safety and efficacy. We have found this lens to be a real asset in our service and we consider this lens implant for people who meet carefully controlled criteria and if we feel they could benefit for a trifocal lens implant.
- Bifocal Lens Implants
The lentis mplus bifocal lens implant is one of the most versatile implants on the market. It can be inserted through a very small incision and comes in a range of close range focus strengths from +3 for strong near range vision to +1.5 which works better for computer range near vision and a +2.0 that combines the best elements of the other two.
Another type of bifocal lens implant that has a high approval rating is the Alcon restor lens. This lens implant now comes in two near range strength’s a +3 add for stronger
close work and a +2 add for easier viewing at mid range activities such as computers/ iPads etc. An additional aspect of this lens is the addition of a blue light filter – thought to help reduce the toxic effects of blue light damage to the macula.
- Toric - Astigmatism Reducing Implants
Around one third of all patients that we treat at Bettersight have the requisite degree of astigmatism on eye scan measurements to benefit from toric lens implants.
These implants are designed to help reduce astigmatism and have in our epxerience worked exceptionally well.
One point to be aware of is that many such implants are bespoke made and there may be a delay of upto six weeks for the implants to become available for use.
- Mono-Vision Blending
With monovision blend, one eye receives a lens for distance vision, while the other receives a lens for near vision. Once you’ve adjusted to mono-vision, your brain can effortlessly select the image you want at each moment, so you can well at near and far distances.
This techniques uses monofocal lenses, rather than a multifocal or accommodative lens. Monofocal lenses provide clear vision at one distance whether for near, intermediate or long distance. Usually, when you have monofocal lenses, you have to wear glasses for any distance other than the distance for which your lens is designed. However in mono-vision blend we combine lenses focused for different distances to provide clear vision without corrective lenses at any distance.
The monofocal (single focus) lens implants can be standard or toric (if significant astigmatism is present or predicted on the basis your preoperative tests).
IOL mono-vision blend is a good choice if you:
- Are keen to reduce your dependency on glasses or contact lenses as much as possible.
- Are comfortable adapting to change and learn new skills easily.
- Are already using monovision blend with contact lenses or glasses
- Wish to minimise the night vision disturbances and reduced contrast effects more associated with multifocal lens implants
Its worth noting that if you haven’t tried mono-vision before but are interested in this approach, your optician may be able to help you ‘try out mono-vision blend’ in advance using specialised contact lenses.
- Toric Bifocal Lens Implants
If your eye scans show a significant level of astigmatism and if you have a strong desire to be less dependent on reading glasses after Clarivu™ / RLE treatment then for such patients and after careful evaluation we may recommend the use of a toric bifocal lens implant. In our experience these have proven to be highly effective and remain a significant part of our offering.
- Accomodating lens implants
At Bettersight we are committed to offering only high quality, proven, effective treatments. Whilst we remain cautiously optimistic that at some point in the future, lens implants may become available that offer true “accommodation“ – that is being able to change focus from far to near with normal eye effort. We do not feel that such an implant exists at the present time – despite enormous amounts of research and investment.
At this point in time and probably for the foreseeable future the most reliable ways to generate good near eyesight after a lens exchange procedure is either with a bifocal / multifocal lens implant or by using mono-vision blend.
We believe it is our role as expert care providers to help guide you towards the most appropriate lens implant selection based on your requirements and your eye scan measurements. Many providers will offer lens exchange treatments using an extremely limited range of implants – at Bettersight we much prefer to take full advantage of the wide range of excellent lens implants that we have access to.
