Customised Cataract Surgery
At Bettersight we use the term Custom cataract surgery to describe cataract surgery performed at its highest level. Customised cataract surgery starts with one of the most important tools of all - an in depth conversation with the patient !
The whole concept of customising the surgery is built around the specific requirements and needs of the patient. As no two patients are identical – custom surgery will also be quite unique to the patient. The range of custom options is extensive and your surgeon will draw upon their own unique experience to create a unique surgical plan tailored specifically to your requirements.
Custom Cataract Surgery Options that may be considered could include any of the following:
- Customised Lens Implants
For patients who desire the highest level of accuracy when it comes to lens implants, at Bettersight we now have access to a range of “made to order” custom lens implants. Custom made lens implant can offer an extra-ordinarily high level of potential accuracy after cataract surgery and can be fashioned to include astigmatic control as well as provide multifocal vision to help minimise the need for reading glasses after surgery.
The only downside of custom lens implants is the short delay – typically four to six weeks – in having the lens implants become available for treatment.
- Trifocal Lens Implants
For almost two decades all “multifocal” lens implants have in fact been Bifocal by optical design. Since 2011 however at Bettersight we have had access to true multifocal lens implants. Trifocal lens implants – as the name implies can create three sharp focal points – across the close vision (reading),
intermediate range (using a computer) and far distance (driving/general viewing). A trifocal lens implant is an excellent potential choice for patients who wish for maximum spectacle freedom after cataract surgery.
- Astigmatism Control
Astigmatism control is perhaps the “cinderella” of cataract surgery. An issue often ignored by many cataract surgeons but one that demands careful management if we are to provide the highest level of eyesight after cataract surgery.
Control of astigmatism can take many forms – from simply creating the incision(s) in the correct position to using customised TORIC astigmatism correcting lens implants. Your surgeon can guide you on what the best method is in managing this special issue to help ensure the best result for you.
- Custom Surgery
Not all cataract surgery is the same ! Every patient may have specific requirements during cataract surgery. Only a truly expert evaluation can allow a comprehensive surgical plan to come into being.
At Bettersight we specialise in managing complex cataract cases. The full plethora of bespoke surgical options is available to us in helping to ensure the best outcome for your surgery. Patients with other eye problems such as macular degeneration, diabetes, glaucoma and inflammatory eye problems will all have specific medical and surgical issues that require careful management.
F.A.Q’s about Customised Cataract Surgery
Below we answer some of the commonly asked questions about ‘customised cataract surgery’.

Every patient will be given the opportunity to consider custom options for cataract surgery – including advanced implants -multifocal, toric, & bespoke implants.
Our standard charge covers for all custom cataract treatment options. No tiered, complex charging.
We provide a one year free of charge aftercare program for all our self funding custom cataract surgery patients covering:Yag Laser capsulotomy if required within this time frame

Any further surgical treatment required in this time frame
We do not cut corners by running jam packed, conveyor belt surgery lists. Every patient is treated like the individual they are.
We use only the very best theatre facilities and only the very highest quality instruments and devices to help ensure a safe and effective operation.
We do not operate a ‘one implant for all policy’ – every lens implant choice is individually made and you are involved in helping to select the implant best suited for your requirements.
Unfortunately current funding restrictions within the NHS make it virtually impossible to guarantee the provision of all the aspects of custom cataract surgery for all NHS patients. This applies especially to the provision of customised or multifocal /toric lens implants.
One of the founding principles of the NHS was equality of provision irrespective of the ability to pay. Though there are some cogent and powerful arguments in favour of “top up charges” in the NHS – it is not currently accepted practice for patients to “part pay” for added benefits to standard NHS provisioned care.
Not necessarily !
Again medical insurance companies just like the NHS have a standard charge structure for the provision of various elements of healthcare. We at Bettersight have not yet come across an insurance company willing to fund the full costs of a fully customised cataract surgery operation. In most cases there is a shortfall that would be passed on to the patient. The shortfall itself will vary from insurance company to insurance company and if you would like advice about this then please just contact us for further details.
