laser vision correction

Sub-Bowmans Keratomileusis

Also known as SBK - this is a very new advancement that I can offer at the Yorkshire Eye Hospital. Essentially the procedure is identical to LASIK but using a highly evolved micro-keratome that can cut ultra thin corneal flaps (around 90 micrometres or 0.09 mm thick compared to standard lasik flap depths of around 130 micrometres). This allows a greater range of focusing errors to be corrected using the LASIK method but it also means less of the corneal tissue is interrupted in cutting the flap. This  brings SBK closer to LASIK with its advantages of rapid vision recovery and minimal post-operative pain  but simultaneously improving tissue preservation close to LASEK standards.

Advantages of SBK Laser Vision Correction

  • Faster visual recovery as compared to LASEK/EpiLASIK
  • Reduced incidence of post operative dry eye as compared to standard LASIK
  • Reduced loss of corneal sensitivty as compared to LASIK
  • Increased treatment range as compared to LASIK/LASEK
  • Comparable flap thickness predictabilty as compared to FemtoLASIK
  • Smoother flap undersurface as compared to FemtoLASIK - better for improved visual quality

In summary: A technique that merges the benefits of LASIK (rapid vision recovery, reduced post op pain) with the tissue preserving benefits of LASEK/Epi-LASIK. A big step forward in laser vision correction.
