- Hyperopia: Or being “longsighted”. This is the clinical term for a patient’s difficulty to focus on objects in the foreground.
- Myopia: Commonly referred to as being “short-sighted”, myopia is when light captured by the eye does not directly focus on the retina but hits in front of it, causing a lack of focus with distant objects.
- Astigmatism: An optical defect that results in vision being blurred or distorted, often occurring due to the irregular shaped cornea or lens.
- Presbyopia: An ageing of the natural lens that leads to a decline in close vision performance for people starting at the age of 45.
For each of the above conditions, Refractive Lens Exchange is potentially suitable for those patients aged over 45 with a stable prescription. Vision correction is achieved through removal the ageing natural lens and replacing this with a clear polymer alternative that can help reduce or even eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. In addition, Cataracts can never form in later life as the natural lens ‘is not there’. The type of lens required is carefully established with reference to the patients initial, their lifestyles and their specific visual requirements. Its imperative for your surgeon to have a broad experience of the many different types if lens implant that are now available and at Bettersight we find that lens implant selection is as much an art as it a science.
What Are The Risks?
AT Bettersight we want the best possible outcome after Refractive lens exchange but all our patients are made aware that no surgery is 100% risk free We believe transparency is key to helping you select the best course of treatment. With RLE, surgical risk can be considered to be slightly lower than with traditional cataract surgery due to several factors but primarily because RLE patients are commonly a decade or more younger than the typical cataract patient, meaning a lower chance of some complications due to the overall better condition of the eye.
What Can I Expect from Bettersight?
We fully recognise that individualised assessment of RLE is critical to creating the strongest base upon which to form a decision on the suitability of RLE for a given patient. Therefore, at your appointment we assess the suitability of the procedure and will be happy to discuss alternatives, including Femtosecond Lasik, LASEK and Wavefront Laser Treatments if your age, or eye condition, is not optimal for RLE. Having treated many thousands of patients, we appreciate the importance of customisation for each and every one of our patients.
At Bettersight we work hard to advance the art of customised eye surgery. All our patients can be assured that our care is provided by a leading Refractive Lens Exchange specialist. All RLE patients also benefit from a comprehensive post-procedure aftercare program that even includes free of charge LASER vision enhancement in the small number of cases where this may be required to ‘fine tune’ vision. Truly no stone is left unturned in the pursuit of meeting our patients’ expectations.
